No shortcuts to good exam results |

The Force Examinations Board has endorsed the results for the October 2002 Standard III Inspectorate Professional Examination in which seven candidates achieved outstanding results.
Among them, Ma On Shan Division Inspector, Ms Ko Mei-yee, and Sai Kung Division Inspector, Mr Chan Chi-yung, got 'Distinction' in two papers, while Police Tactical Unit E Company Inspector, Mr Cheung Chi-wai, Yuen Long Division Inspector, Mr Chan Yan, Chai Wan Division Inspectors, Mr Choi Tung-tsoi, and Ms Man Ngar-man, and Commercial Crime Bureau Inspector, Ms Kung Hing-fun, each achieved 'Distinction' in one paper.
Many colleagues are curious to know how these outstanding candidates managed to prepare so well for the examination despite their tight working schedules. Here is some advice from the top two achievers in the examination, Ms Ko and Mr Chan.
Like other candidates, both officers had spent much time in going through the Force Procedures Manual, Police Manual, Police General Orders and studied analyses of past examination questions in debriefing reports. They said that the service of 'POINT From Home' made their life much easier because they could do their research at home with their personal computers.
For Mr Chan, the process of preparing for examinations was quite torturous."I was specialised in science subjects when I was a college student. Therefore, it was a great challenge for me to memorise the details of numerous procedures, orders and ordinances."
The Sai Kung officer attributed his recent success to luck and hard work. "There are no shortcuts to good examination results. In my case, I had given up some of my leisure activities to concentrate on my studies. I am glad to know that my efforts eventually paid off!"
Group discussions, colleagues' advice
Ms Ko did things slightly differently. She formed a study group with several colleagues who also sat for the examination for mutual support and encouragement. "We regularly got together to discuss the topics we had studied."
Ms Ko said that she was quite lucky because she was granted a short vacation leave before the examination so that she could concentrate on her studies. "For those who are unable to take vacation leave before the examination," she said, "I advise them to start their preparation earlier so that they do not have to rush during the final stage."
Both officers agreed that continuously acquiring updated knowledge and getting advice from superiors and experienced colleagues were also essential to their examination preparation.
The duo recently received letters of congratulations issued by the Director of Personnel & Training, while congratulatory letters signed by the Assistant Commissioner (Training) were sent to the other five outstanding candidates.
The Debriefing Report and the results of the candidates who passed the examination were published on October 25 through PEN.
