As part of the on-going effort to reduce cyber crime, the Force has joined hands with the Education Department (ED), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) and Queensway Junior Chamber (QJC) to promote cyber ethics among the younger generation.

The 'Fight Against Cyber Crime' Project, jointly organised by the four parties with the support of various organisations, is aimed at enhancing public awareness of various forms of cyber crime and reinforcing the right attitudes and ethics in using computers and the Internet - especially on the part of youngsters.

A press conference was held in early December and speakers included: Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) (Technology Crime Division) Superintendent, Dr Hilton Chan; the ED Curriculum Development Council's Learning Resources & Support Services Committee Chairperson, Mr Yau Yat-heem; QJC President, Miss Nini Chia; the QJC Project Chairman, Mr Adam Siu, and the HKPU Information Technology Services Director, Mr Richard Li.

To further disseminate the message, two seminars and a drama were held at the HKPU the following week for primary and secondary students.

The CCB Detective Senior Inspector, Mr Kevin Leung, was one of the speakers at the seminars. He told OffBeat: "Students and youngsters may commit cyber crime themselves but they may also become victims of such crime and it is vital for us to get that message across.

"Teenagers are open to various forms of potential threats from cyberspace, ranging from privacy, pornography, ICQ-related crimes to Internet fraud. Some youngsters may be unaware of the potential dangers of physical meetings with strangers encountered on the Internet.

"One of the unavoidable flip sides of technological advancement is the heightened risk for all youngsters. So we ask the community for a concerted effort to help our next generation to surf the world of knowledge safely," he concluded.
