Police Boxing Night |

|
Once more the Police Officers Club hosted what is rapidly becoming the social event of the year in the form of the third successive Police Boxing Night on December 6, 2002. The 200 plus available seats were booked well in advance and those on the waiting list were no doubt disappointed not to get a seat. This year the top table was graced by the presence of the Director (Operations), Mr Tang King-shing, as the guest of honour, flanked by Mr Mike Dowie and Mr Ian Seabourne, in their roles as Chairman of the Police Sports Council and Chairman of the Police Boxing Club respectively. There were five fights scheduled for this year featuring a mixture of boys from the Breakthrough Boxing Club (in blue) and two officers (in red)fighting for the newly formed Police Boxing Club. Their opponents came from a mixture of other boxing clubs in Hong Kong and this saw a departure from previous years where the fighters had all fought from within the same club. The event was once again hosted by the irreplaceable David Williams who had the crowd rolling in laughter from start to finish with his uncanny resemblance to Austin Powers. The Breakthrough boys acquitted themselves well by winning two out of their three bouts. Once again Mr Ngan Wing-yiu took the Hoggard Cup for overall best fighter. Next up was Senior Inspector Mark Mak Man-yu in his first fight and pitted against a much younger boxer from the Box for Fun club. Mark put in a gritty performance and no doubt his superior fitness gave him the winning edge. The final fight of the night was the much talked about and long-awaited bout between Yuen Long Divisional Commander, Superintendent Mr Danny Lawley, fighting in competition for the first time in many years and James Woods, a towering lawyer who also plays for Hong Kong in rugby. This was James's first fight and although he put in a plucky performance he was no match for the superior boxing skills and ring-craft of Danny who won all four rounds much to the delight of the (admittedly partisan) crowd. Robbie McRobbie, the Assistant Manager of the POC, continues to receive plaudits from those who attended and no doubt the whole event reflects very favourably on the Force as a whole and will be a permanent feature on many a social calendar to come.
