Police officers and their families could take pride in pursuing a healthy lifestyle by doing volunteer work, Deputy Commissioner (Management), Mr Fung Siu-yuen, said during the December 15 Force Volunteer Service Day.

"Serving the community is the essence of the culture of the Hong Kong Police Force and a considerable number of our officers are making good use of their spare time by helping the needy in our community," he said.

The event, held at the Police Sports & Recreation Club, saw some 30 booths set up by different Police associations, the Social Welfare Department and organisations such as the Hong Kong Red Cross and the Salvation Army, to introduce the volunteer services they provided for target groups ranging from youths, senior citizens to people with disabilities.

During the ceremony, dozens of enthusiastic volunteer groups from the Force were presented with Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of their good deeds.

Other officiating guests included Assistant Commissioner (Personnel), Mr Chan Wai-ki and Chief Superintendent (Personnel Services), Mr Jawaid Khan.

With a long history of volunteerism, the Force has been seeing an increasing number of officers engage in such worthy causes as blood donation, youth development services, and comfort visits to hospitals and centres for the aged.

The latest Force-wide warm clothing collection exercise made over 9,000 kilograms of clothes available for distribution to the needy.

Meanwhile, in response to an earlier call, more than 300 police officers have signed up for volunteer work in the areas of environmental protection and fund raising during the year.
