How did a bomb disposal expert dismantle a bomb in the nick of time? How did quick-thinking beat patrol officers capture Hong Kong's most wanted man? How did a negotiator persuade a would-be suicide to abandon an attempt? You should not miss the new television programme, 'On the Beat'.

Life and Death Decisions

Jointly produced by Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the TV drama series will be based on real incidents in which split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. It will also present the challenges and dangers confronted by frontline Police workers in their daily work.

From Friday January 17, at 7pm, TVB-Jade will broadcast eight weekly half-hour programmes in a new series called 'On the Beat'. The programme will feature short dramas showing the real-life experience of officers employed in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau, the Emergency Unit, the Small Boat Unit, the Regional Crime Unit, the Police Negotiation Cadre, the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, the Police Dog Unit, and frontline officers walking the beat.

Anthony Wong and Hacken Lee lend a hand

'On the Beat' aims to further enhance the image of the Force and promote public understanding and knowledge of Police work with a view to encouraging the public to join hands with the Police in the fight against crime.

A working committee chaired by PPRB's Superintendent Ms Rose Tong Kit-lin was formed with RTHK as early as last May to prepare for the production of the programme.

Ms Stella Sze Kit-ling, Executive Producer of RTHK, told OffBeat that library research and field visits were conducted to gather information about these true stories. She said: "To grasp first-hand information about the cases, we talked to officers in charge of such cases.

"We must also thank all frontline officers for their assistance in the production and filming of the drama series," she added.

A number of artistes guest-starred in the drama series. They include award-winning actors Mr Anthony Wong and Mr Patrick Tam. Other artistes include Messers Alex Fong Chung-shun, Jonathan Cheung, Alex Fong Li-sun, Aaron Wong, Sunny Chan, Shaun Tam and Tony Ho, and Ms Jade Leung, Ms Nicola Cheung, Ms Farini Chang and Ms Bobo Chan.

To further promote the programme, canto-pop singer Mr Hacken Lee has been invited to sing the theme song of the new television programme.
