There will be 3,800 staff working in the Police Headquarters Phase 3 Building when it is finished. To provide them with the information technology (IT) essential to improved efficiency and productivity, a modern communication infrastructure is to be installed with the bandwidth appropriate to meeting current and foreseeable requirements.

The Phase 3 Building structured cabling system is mainly comprised of 'Category 6 Unshielded Twisted Pairs', 'OM3 Multi-mode' fibre cable and a cable management system. 'Category 6 Unshielded Twisted Pairs' involves a newly-established copper-cable technology enabling desktop computers to network in gigabytes, whereas 'OM3 Multi-mode' fibre is a newly-invented fibre-technology providing a 10 Gigabyte backbone.

The system, using 70 km of OM3 fibre and more than 8,000 Category 6 Unshielded Twisted Pairs, will be capable of handling converged voice, video, fax and data transmission, and multi-media training. Any change of terminal (telephone, facsimile machine or computer), or the addition of terminals, will take less than an hour and mean little or no interruption of service to end-users.

An open tender exercise was conducted last July and attracted a total of 23 tenders. The contract was awarded in early December. It will be the first office building in Hong Kong to use this structured cabling methodology.
