Members of the Hong Kong Police Shooting Team walked away with gold from the 26th South East Asia Shooting Championships held in Hanoi early in December. They beat Hanoi, the favourites and event host.

The three team members CIPA Mr Edgar Yang Joe-tsi, Sergeant Mr Stephen Lee Siu-wah, and Sergeant Mr Lau Tung-yuk represented their native Hong Kong in the Olympic-type 25-meter Rapid Firing event, scoring 560, 558 and 552 respectively. This marks the first time ever in the history of the Hong Kong Shooting Team that gold has been won at this event. Vietnam was runner-up.

Three of them went on to win a team silver in the Centre Firing event, in which Mr Lee won the bronze individual award. Not content with three medals, Mr Lee, together with the two other seeded shooters, took another team silver in the Standard Pistol event.

Woman Police Constable Ms Wong Tung-nei also took the team silver with two other seeded shooters in the Ladies Sports Pistol event.

"It was proven once again that the will to win comes from a strong team spirit, synergy, diligence and complementation, which is the strength of a police team," said team leader Mr Yang.

A total of 15 medals, including two individual golds in the rapid firing and standard pistol events, were brought back this year, firing Hong Kong to 3rd place overall in the medal scores, out of the nine participating countries in the region.

Messrs Yang, Lee and Lau will have another chance to bring home the medals next year as they have already been selected to train and compete for the Asian Shooting Championships 2003 to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
