Thirty-odd members of the Police marathon training team, coached by Mr Fung Wah-tim, took part in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and achieved excellent results.

For elite distance runner Mr Ching Ying-wai and novice Mr Lai Hok-yan, it was their first-ever participation in a marathon race and their results were most encouraging. Mr Ching recorded 2:44'01" and ranked third Hong Kong overall while Mr Lai recorded 2:46'55" and ranked fourth Hong Kong overall.

Another team member Mr Lo Kin-leung recorded 2:59'01", which broke his own record by as many as 17 minutes and ranked him 22nd Hong Kong overall. These runners not only achieved excellent results for themselves but also won the Overall Team Championship in this year's Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon with a time of 8:29'57" beating the runner-up team by more than 26 minutes.

Two other Senior Inspectors, Mr Andy Gidley and Mr Andy Naylor, though they were not members of the marathon training team, also achieved their personal best records of 2:52'03" and 2:57'59" respectively. There were five athletes from the Force who finished the race within three hours, and this is the best record so far in the Force. Congratulations to all these athletes.

Mr Andy Naylor, Mr Ching Ying-wai and Mr Lai Hok-yan together with four other Force athletes have been nominated by the Police Athletics Club to represent the Hong Kong Police to take part in the World Police and Fire Games 2003 in Barcelona, Spain, in July this year. We look forward to seeing them achieving even better results and winning even more glory for the Force.
