Commissioner Mr Tsang Yam-pui, together with representatives from Police regions, wings, branches and staff associations, paid their last respects to Mr Leung at the funeral.

Mr Tsang Yam-pui extended his condolences to Mr Leung's family, adding that all Force members would take great pride in Mr Leung's courage and dedication.

Scores of wreaths were laid at the funeral parlour, many from senior Government officials and business and community leaders.

Mr Leung's coffin, draped with the SAR flag, was carried by his former colleagues, and escorted to Gallant Garden for burial. The burial ceremony ended when a Force bugler sounded the 'Last Post' and officers saluted as the coffin was lowered into the grave.

On the morning of May 5, Mr Leung was washed away by fast-moving floodwaters while he, together with Police Constable Mr Fung Yap-wing, tried to rescue villagers trapped in the torrent in Lin Ma Hang, Ta Kwu Ling when the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal was in force. Mr Leung's body was later found in a nearby banana plantation following a search-and-rescue operation.

Mr Leung joined the Force in 1980 and was promoted to the rank of Senior Inspector last year. Having served in different formations, Mr Leung was transferred to Ta Kwu Ling Division this March.

Chief Executive Mr Tung Chee Hwa, Secretary for Security Mrs Regina Ip as well as Secretary for Civil Service Mr Joseph Wong, all expressed profound sadness upon Mr Leung's death.

Deeply grieved by Mr Leung's death, Mr Tung said: "Mr Leung exemplified the bravery and selfless devotion of a policeman who sacrificed his life while faithfully carrying out his duty. He is worthy of our highest respect."

Mr Leung, who was well-known for his devotion to work, was single and 47 years of age. His fellow colleagues remembered the Inspector's warmth towards everyone and praised their lost colleague as a courageous man who led by example.
