Viewing Readability and Word Count information

In Word, you can get statistical information about your document, like Readability and Word Counting.

Word shows Readability Statistics not only about the document length but also about standard readability measures such as average sentences length, reading grade level, and percentage of passive sentences. However, this option is not available if you're not checking grammar in your document.

Enabling Readability Statistics

In Word, choose 'Tools' menu --> 'Options'--> 'Spelling and Grammar' tab. Check the box 'show readability statistics'.

When you finish checking your document, the 'Readability Statistics' dialog box will appear.

But please be reminded that this function only counts the English words.

Besides, if you're simply curious about the size of your document, you can use 'Word Count' command, which will show the number of words, characters, lines, paragraphs, and other elements in your document. When Word counts, it includes all the text in your document as well as headers and footers. Of course, you can also include the text from footnotes or endnotes in the count. But you should click the 'Include Footnotes and Endnotes' check box in the 'Word Count' dialog box.

Using Word Count command

In Word, choose 'Tools' menu --> 'Word Count' command. Or you can choose 'File' menu --> 'Properties'--> 'Statistics' tab. You'll see the same word count statistics.

If you also like to see the number of bytes required to store the text in your document, you can choose 'File' menu --> 'Properties' --> 'General' tab.

Please note that Word will not count words inside graphics, but it will count words used in captions for graphics.

Next time, I will show you how to summarise documents.
