Simulated live-fire facility for Airport

The new Airport Security Unit (ASU) FX Training Range at Chek Lap Kok Police Station was formally opened by the outgoing New Territories South Regional Commander, Mr Mike Dowie, in early May.

The construction of a designated and purpose designed firing range for the use of FX simulated ammunition was first proposed in early 2002. A number of options and designs were examined before it was finally decided to make use of the extensive covered vehicle parking area in the station compound. By adding two rooms, one for range briefings and the other for equipment storage, once the metal shutters surrounding the parking area are lowered, a safe area of approximately 6,000 square feet is available for tactics training.

Work began in early February this year and took less than two months to complete. ASU officers designed the interior layout for the construction of over 70 moveable wooden partitions and doors. Sergeant Mr Wong Che-keung, a fully trained carpenter, and his 'apprentice', Police Constable Mr Fung Leung-kwong, spent many hours labouring in a makeshift woodwork shop in the compound. The results speak for themselves - the range fittings are of a very high standard and allow a great variety in training. In addition to corridors and rooms, with the help of Cathay Pacific and the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO), it has also been possible to create a mock-up of an aircraft interior and Messrs Wong and Fung are currently working on a number of replica check-in counters to simulate the interior of the airport terminal building.

Since all of the fittings are moveable the range can be set up as and when required. The rest of the time the area can be used for its original purpose of parking.

Mr Dowie was given a short tour of the facility and then formally opened the range by being the first officer to 'open fire' (albeit at an unarmed balloon with FX ammunition). Accompanied by Airport District Commander, Mr Chau Kwok-leung, he then watched a short tactical demonstration by ASU officers. Finally all involved returned to the Station Mess where they were joined by other officers in wishing Mr Dowie a fond farewell and the best of luck in his new posting to Kowloon West.
