In view of the outbreak of the SARS crisis, Psychological Services Group (PSG) convened a Round-table Forum on 'Positive Psychological Coping in a Major Community Crisis' on May 29 at the Central Library Lecture Theatre. This event was well received with over 140 Force members participating.

A panel of mental health experts from different sectors of the community shared their professional advice and valuable experience in coping with the SARS crisis. Renowned Psychiatrist Dr Chan Chung-mau, Social Welfare Department Chief Clinical Psychologist Mr Helios Lau, Hospital Authority Senior Clinical Psychologist Mrs Rosalie Kwong, and Lingnan University Associate Professor Dr Siu Oi-ling, together with the Police Clinical Psychologist Dr Edmond Lau gave their views on how to adopt positive psychological coping in face of the SARS outbreak from personal, organisational and community perspectives.

Dr Chan pointed out different stages of emotion that members of the public may experience during a period of crisis. Mr Helios Lau shared his experience in educating the public to use positive thinking to cope with the threat from the SARS crisis. Mrs Rosalie Kwong introduced the work done by OASIS-Personal Crisis Management Centre for medical staff during the SARS outbreak.

Experience Sharing Video

A meaningful video clip showing frontline medical staff sharing their experience in combating the SARS crisis was shown during the Forum. The audience was deeply impressed by the courage displayed by the medical staff in facing the 'plague'. Then, Dr Siu provided a comprehensive review of the various factors affecting staff morale and mental health in an organisation. Lastly, Police Clinical Psychologist Dr Edmond Lau summarised the Force members' experiences and reactions in this crisis, and the supportive services provided to Force members affected by the SARS.

This Forum is one of the activities under the 'CARELINKS 2003' Campaign, which aims at enhancing Force members' awareness of mental health and promoting peer support. We sincerely ask for your continuous support to CARELINKS 2003. Let's create a harmonious and healthy workplace.
