Police have adopted a series of measures to tackle the problem of the theft of trailers in the New Territories North Region (NTN) leading to a decrease in the number of stolen trailers from 72 in the first quarter of last year to 25 in the first quarter of this year. Altogether there were 251 stolen trailers in the territory last year.

On May 20, Force and Customs & Excise Department officers jointly mounted a round-the-clock operation to check on suspicious containers and trailers at the boundary control points at Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok.

The Force had also exchanged intelligence and information relating to criminal syndicates with their Mainland counterparts which helped them to step up efforts in raiding storage bases for stolen trailers.

With the co-operation of both enforcement agencies, a trailer reported missing from Hong Kong was recovered from a Shenzhen carpark near the Man Kam To cross border area on May 30.

On May 27, NTN Crime headquarters and the NTN Crime Prevention Office jointly organised a seminar for cross-boundary truck drivers to raise their awareness on the security for trailers. During the seminar, views on tackling the issue of theft of trailers were exchanged. A police spokesman said that stealing of trailers were offences of theft or handling stolen goods which carried a maximum penalty of imprisonment of 10 years and 14 years respectively.

Police also appealed to the industry to step up the security for trailers by adopting appropriate security measures, including using padlocks of good quality and parking their trailers in car parks equipped with sufficient security facilities.
