Former officer thanks Force's warm support

Former Superintendent Mr Jim McDermott has been fighting cancer for some time now and earlier this year underwent a painful course of radiation therapy that has now been replaced with chemotherapy. He is now feeling very much better, even though his battle continues. He recently wrote to say a very warm thank you to old friends who, hearing of his predicament, had sent words of comfort and encouragement to him.

He also mentioned the OffBeat story about former Special Duties Unit officer Mr Tsang Kwong-biu who lost the use of his right arm years ago but continues to struggle against his disability.

"He is an inspiration," wrote Mr McDermott. "His road to recovery has shown his determination and fortitude. I am also a Christian, like Mr Tsang, and I would like to thank him for sharing his thoughts with me.

"There have been many kind emails from friends made during my 27 years in Hong Kong. I cannot tell what a difference all the support makes when going through a trying experience. I thank them all," he wrote.

Mr McDermott has had to postpone a planned visit to Hong Kong with his wife in July and August this year, but he can be contacted via the internet ex-rhkp site, or by email: jim.mcdermott@sympatico.ca
