Following the Ting Kau bus incident on July 10, the Traffic Accident Victims Assistance (TAVA) Section of the Social Welfare Department was able to offer prompt assistance to the victims and their families thanks to the ready, unstinting and dedicated help of the Force, in particular Traffic Branch Headquarters Road Safety Unit Woman Chief Inspector Mrs Betty Lam Cheung Suk-chi and her officers," wrote Assistant Director of Social Welfare Mrs Rachel Cartland in a memorandum addressed to Chief Superintendent Traffic.

"I did my very best to help," Mrs Lam told OffBeat. "I am happy, however, that I was able to ensure that the results of investigations by officers at the scene were promptly passed to the appropriate staff at TAVA.

"TAVA needed to know the identity of those sent to hospital and the hospitals to which they had been sent so that they could deploy officers to render assistance to them or their relatives. Staff of TAVA also needed to know the identity of those who had died, the name and address of their next-of-kin and the mortuaries to which they had been sent."

Mrs Lam explained that she did not just pass information along, or simply tell someone else to do so.

"I always take my work very seriously, in particular, in this incident, I put frontline officers and social workers in touch with one another and then, later, checked that their liaison was working effectively. I felt responsible for ensuring that the earliest possible assistance was rendered to everyone involved.

"I am pleased to receive confirmation that it was, and I take great satisfaction in knowing that I made a significant contribution," she concluded.
