Road safety gets an airing in Tai Po |

New Territories North (NTN) Region Traffic Headquarters, Road Safety Campaign Committee and Road Safety Patrol jointly organised the Regional Road Safety Campaign Opening Ceremony and Safe Cycling Day on a sunny day in August. Over 500 people turned out for the event. The event started with a spectacular 100-bicycle procession led by former Hong Kong Triathlon luminary Mr Chui Kam-tong. Officiating at the Opening Ceremony were NTN T Senior Superintendent Mr Chiu Kam-fai, NTN Regional Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman cum District Councillor Mr Yip Fong-keung, Tai Po District Council Vice-Chairman Mr Cheng Chun-ping and Tai Po Assistant District Officer Ms Chan Hau-man. During a speech, Mr Chiu pointed out that traffic accidents involving cyclists had shown a slight increase in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period last year, which was why his staff had organised 'Cycling Education & Prosecution' schemes for two weeks each in April and July. It was also the justification for that day's jointly organised event. He emphasised that bicycles were vehicles and not simply toys. Riders had to obey the same traffic regulations as drivers and operators of all other kinds of vehicles; especially those relating to traffic lights, traffic signs and road markings. He assured all present that the Force would continue to deploy officers to blacksites and heavily-used pedestrian crossings to mount a variety of safety publicity and education campaigns throughout the year.
