Promoting Harmony and Support in the Police Families Workshop

Harmonious family relationship has been proved to be an important protective factor and buffer against stress during adversity. Nevertheless, the stress inherent in police work - irregular working hours, complicated interpersonal relationships, secretive nature of duties, unique police culture - exerts intense strain on officers' family lives. Conflicts and misunderstandings arising in the family would in turn weaken officers' own buffer against stress.

Recognising the importance of family to our mental well-being, the Psychological Services Group has invited a renowned clinical psychologist and consultant from the US, Dr Ellen Kirschman, to conduct an Open Forum on "Promoting Harmony and Support in Police Families" for our Force members. Dr Kirschman has been an invited guest at the FBI Academy, and has been working with police officers and their families in the US for more than 20 years.

In the forthcoming Forum, Dr Kirschman will talk about specific police stressors and introduce to police families unique strategies to overcome the obstacles of communication with your spouse/partner. There will be a sharing session where a few police couples will share their experiences about their struggles in building a harmonious family relationship. Besides, we will arrange for you and your spouse/partner a delicious dessert tea buffet, wax hand production (one model for each family), and some special souvenirs. Game activities will also be arranged for children while the workshop is being conducted by Dr Kirschman to facilitate full participation of parents joining with their children.

Details of the Open Forum are:

Date & Time: Nov 1 (Sat); 2 pm to 6 pm
