Thanks from the public

Frontline officers, apart from beating crimes, very often have to face all sorts of eventualities, and some are not crime-related as illustrated by the following cases. The officers concerned not only have earned the gratitude and praise of the people they have assisted, but also helped enhance the image of the Force.

A "Thank You" letter from Shandong

A Shandong resident has sent a letter to officers at Ta Kwu Ling Division, expressing her gratitude for their efforts in locating her missing 13-year-old son.

In her letter, Ms Song Fuling thanked repeatedly the Hong Kong Police officers for locating his son. "Your quality service is something that I will never forget!" she wrote in the letter.

Ms Song was on a visit to Hong Kong on July 24 when she was separated from her son in the bustling area of Mong Kok. She desperately searched for him for a long time in the area but to no avail. Having nobody to turn to for help, she eventually approached the Lo Wu Reporting Centre for assistance.

"I couldn't believe it when, not long afterwards, a policeman told me that my son had been found. But when another policeman showed me my son's photo, I felt more assured. I was so moved and nearly cried when I saw the officer damped with sweat," she said in the letter.

PCs "deliver" baby boy

Tseung Kwan O Division Police Constables Tsoi Po-wing and Woo Kam-tong hardly expect that they would have to play the role of a midwife during their duties. But when they responded to a 999 call in the early hours of June 19, they had to muster all their first-aid and medical knowledge in helping a young woman, a two-way permit holder, to give birth to a baby boy.

The 23-year-old woman was in labour when the two officers arrived at her home in a Tseung Kwan O estate. PC Woo immediately comforted the woman, while PC Tsoi "delivered" a baby boy. Moments later they handed over the woman and the baby to the care of ambulance staff.

The woman's father-in-law, Mr Choi Ming-chit, has recently presented Tseung Kwan O Division officers with a "thank you" banner as a token of his appreciation of Police assistance.
