Hong Kong Police Now & Then

How much do you know about the Hong Kong Police?

Do you know that the Police were also responsible for issuing identity cards and even traffic licences in the 1930s? How did the warrant card look like before the World War II? Why is the Western Police Station also known as the No.7 Police Station? Do you still remember the winter uniform of Staff Sergeant in the 1960s?

If you want to know more about the Hong Kong Police, the Hong Kong Police Museum is the right place to go. Featuring the Police developments since 1844, a new thematic exhibition entitled "Hong Kong Police Then & Now" is now on display at the Current Exhibition Gallery of the Museum.

To prepare for the display, Museum staff have spent more than one year to collect relevant information from various sources, including the University of Hong Kong Library and the Public Records Office. The Museum had also received generous donations from community dignitaries and retired colleagues for display at the exhibition.

The exhibition is divided into 10 categories: Heads of the Police Force; Early Police Work; Headquarters; the Ethnic Composition of the Police Force; the Numbering System of Police Stations; Street Names of Hong Kong and the Police Force; History of the Police Badge; Women in the Police Force; Uniforms, and Quarters.

If you have any interesting items to donate or lend to the Force, please contact the Museum's Curator Mr Wong Nai-kwan on 2849-8012.

Located at 27 Coombe Road, the Hong Kong Police Museum opens from 9 am to 5 pm from Wednesdays to Sundays and from 2 pm to 5 pm on Tuesdays. It closes on Mondays and public holidays. Enquiries can be made on 2849-7019.
