CCB seminar on IT crime is well received | ||
The Technology Crime Division of Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) has recently held a half-day Seminar on Information Technology (IT) Crime to provide a forum for Internet Service Providers (ISPs)/Internet Content Providers (ICPs), and other local law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to discuss the difficulties or problems they faced and issues of concern so as to enhance co-operation in the fight against emerging technology crimes.
Following the success of the Technology Crime Forum 2002 held in December last year to harmonise the roles of ISPs/ICPs and LEAs in preventing computer crime and handling security incidents, the Technology Crime Division decided to organise another seminar to provide an opportunity for ISP participants to understand the constraints faced by LEAs in investigating technology crimes and how they can effectively assist in various investigations.
Officiating at the opening of the seminar, Head of the Division, Senior Superintendent Kenneth Li Kin-fai said: "While the Internet and other information technologies are bringing enormous benefits to our society, they also provide new opportunities for criminal behaviour."
He stressed the importance of co-operation between LEAs and local ISPs in maintaining law and order in the cyberspace. "I am delighted to note the level of support and co-operation given to us by various local Internet Service Providers, and I look forward to seeing further enhancement through more direct communications and sharing of experiences," he added.
A total of 40 participants from 10 major ISPs/ICPs, together with officers from other LEAs (including Customs and Excise, ICAC and Immigration) and a Security Bureau representative, attended the seminar. The seminar was well received by all participants who had suggested that similar events should be held regularly for information exchange and fostering closer working relationship.
