PSG & SRG to run series on "Balances and Wisdom"

The year of 2003 was a rough time for us - SARS, the losses of a number of celebrities, tension between the Government and local citizens, and wars and disasters happening in different corners of the world. There were also a few unpleasant incidents that had happened in our Force. Discharging law enforcement duties under such circumstances presents an enormous challenge to our police officers. Relatives and friends would tease our police officers for having an "iron bowl" as civil servants. However, the stress stemming from the demanding tasks and changes arising from the budget cut of the Government is unimaginable to outsiders.

We believe that "Balances" and "Wisdom" are two essential tools for police officers to successfully cope with the challenges ahead. "Balances" means striking a balance among different aspects of our lives. It is like placing our eggs in different baskets instead of just one. It is about finding a balance between work and health by escaping from work during time-off and giving our body and mind adequate rest, managing our time so that we can spend quality time with our beloved ones, enjoying meaningful interpersonal relationship, and finding a balance between the old and the new by accepting new challenges while learning from the past.

"Wisdom" is accumulated from our education, past experiences and learning from others. Apart from wisdom at work, wisdom of life is far more important in building a healthy and happy life. You can find wisdom from books and people surrounding you, especially when you are willing to be open about absorbing different perspectives while reflecting on yours. Wisdom of life means how to live wisely, how to lead a rewarding life that you want, how to utilise our resources to help ourselves and others in tackling life difficulties, how to make a good decision among the choices we have, how to add some colours in our daily living, and how to strike a balance among different aspects of life.

Following last year's initiative of "CARELINKS 2003 - Mental Health at the Workplace Campaign", the PSG will continue organising different activities to highlight the importance of "Balances" and "Wisdom" among Force members. Starting from next issue of OffBeat, the PSG will collaborate with the SRG on introducing a brand new column on "Balances in Law Enforcement". We will interview a number of police officers who will talk about their stories in fighting different challenges in life. We hope that our readers, through reading those articles, can gain their own "Balances" and "Wisdom" in their own police career.
