Members of the Force did not forget the less unfortunate in their midst as cold spells hit the territory before and after the Chinese New Year.

Collection of warm clothing

During the festive season, the Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps, the Personnel Services Branch, Staff Associations, the Police Married Quarters/Disciplined Services Quarters Consumers' Co-operative Societies, and the Police Married Quarters/Disciplined Services Quarters Residents' Associations mobilised to render services and assistance to the needy. In fact well before the festive season, they had run a campaign to collect warm clothing in conjunction with the Salvation Army.

At a ceremony held at the Kwai Chung Junior Police Officers Married Quarters on January 9, Chief Superintendent Kong Shing-shun handed over warm clothing collected during the campaign to the Salvation Army. A total of 23,868 lbs of warm clothing had been collected, breaking all previous records.

In a note of thanks, the Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macao Command's chief, Lt. Colonel Tan Thean-seng, praised the Force for its full support and active participation in caring for and helping the needy.

Care for senior citiziens

Meanwhile, shortly before the Chinese New Year Day, over 50 members of the Volunteer Services Corps and their family members visited the Salvation Army Nam Shan Residence for Senior Citizens to bring joy and warmth to the elderly. They spent the morning playing games with and singing songs for the elderly, as well as distributing gifts to them.

The Convener of the Volunteer Services Corps, Chief Superintendent Cheung Siu-wah, thanked the volunteers for carrying out "this very touching activity". He also thanked other units of the Force in bringing the campaign on collection of warm clothing to a successful conclusion.

Mr Cheung also urged members of the Force to continue taking part in volunteer work so as to enhance the Force's caring image.

The Salvation Army's Tai Hang Corps Commanding Officer, Major Tso Choi Ying-chai, said the Volunteer Services Corps' visit symbolised community care for the elderly.
