NTN officers care for handicapped children

More than 20 handicapped children have spent a fun-filled day at sea on board a yacht with the care of members of the New Territories North (NTN) Emergency Unit Voluntary Service Team.

Headed by WCIP Chan Wing-mee, 20 members of the Voluntary Service Team had led and looked after the handicapped children throughout the outing to Tung Lung Chau on the yacht, "Huan". For the first time in their lives, and under the watchful eyes of the volunteers, the children enjoyed games on board the yacht and frolicked in the sea. The outing was really an eye-opener for the children, and had enabled them to appreciate the humane side of the long arm of the law.

The officers could hardly expressed their satisfaction on seeing the children's happy moods and smiling faces. The outing has given them a rare opportunity to come into contact with, and gain a better understanding of, handicapped persons. They all have expressed wish to undertake similar work in the near future.

One of the officers, Sergeant Lam Hok-chim, has been engaged in volunteer work for handicapped children for a long time. Since August last year, he has been teaming up with the coordinator of the Voluntary Service Team, Station Sergeant Lee Yung-nam, and staff of the Bradbury Centre at Tin King to run a service project to provide outdoor activities for handicapped children. The activities include sailing, jogging, barbeques, tree planting, kite flying and visits to scenic spots, and both SSGT Lee and SGT Lam have endeared themselves to the participants through these activities.
