Children of Force members again have a chance to gain exposure to other cultures, broaden their horizons and improve their communication skills under the "Mainland and Overseas Summer Course Sponsorship" scheme.

Under the scheme, a total of 56 places are available for applications by children of officers below the rank of CSP this year. The deadline for applications is April 30.

Sponsorship is open to children who are aged 12 to 21 on the dates of submission of applications, and who have not been sponsored by the Police Welfare Fund for attending summer course. Allocation of places is on the proportional basis of one place for children of SSP and SP, five for CIP, SIP and IP, and 50 for children of JPOs.

Parents and children can choose their own courses on the Mainland or overseas (excluding Macao and Taiwan), subject to the endorsement of the Force. General sightseeing tours will not be considered.

Students need to submit copies of their school reports for the previous academic year (2002-03) as supporting documents of their above average performance at school.

Successful applicants will be chosen by ballot if the number of applications exceeds the available quota. The ballot will take place on May 8 in PSRC and announcement of the result will be made by PEN and individual notices.

Each successful applicant will be sponsored to a maximum of $5,000 or 70 per cent of the course fee, whichever is the lower.

To help attendance of summer courses costing more than $5,000, parents of successful applicants may apply to Regional Welfare Officers separately for a maximum loan of $20,000 under the "Loan for Police Children Attending Mainland and Overseas Summer Course". Subject to the normal approval criteria that include no outstanding debts owed to the Police Welfare Fund, the loan is repayable by 10 monthly installments.

The course must be organised by a reputable bona fide institution, subject to endorsement by the Force. Successful applicants will have to submit course details and confirmation of a place to CSP PS (Attn.: EO PS2) before June 12.

Enquiries can be made on the Personnel Services Branch hotline 2804-1111, or to EO PS 2 Miss Connie Ho on 2804-1109.
