The senior officials included the Chief Executive (represented by the Aide-de-Camp), Chief Secretary Donald Tsang, Financial Secretary Henry Tang, Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung, Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee.

Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai led representatives from Police Regions, Wings, Branches and Staff Associations to bid farewell to the young police officer at the funeral parlour.

PC Chan's coffin, draped with the SAR flag, was carried by his former colleagues in Traffic Kowloon West and escorted to Gallant Garden for burial.

On the morning of March 18, PC Chan was on his way to the scene of another accident on a motorcycle when he collided head-on with a private car on the Gascoigne Road Flyover in Yau Ma Tei, and was thrown from the flyover onto a slip road. He was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was certified dead later.

In the afternoon of the same day, Acting Commissioner Fung Siu-yuen visited the family of the late PC Chan and expressed deep shock and sadness at the tragedy. Mr Fung said: "Mr Chan's death in the execution of his duties is a great loss to the Force and to Hong Kong."

Extending his condolences to PC Chan's family, Mr Fung said full support would be rendered to them through their sad and difficult period.

Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai, who was attending a conference in Australia at the time of the accident, said afterwards that he was saddened to learn about PC Chan's death and that every assistance would be provided to his family.

Meanwhile, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said in a statement issued after the mishap that he was deeply saddened by Mr Chan's death.

Mr Lee said: "I am deeply sorry for the loss of a committed police officer. I wish to express my deepest condolences to his family. The Security Bureau stands ready to provide all possible assistance to help his family members."

PC Chan, aged 28, was well liked by his colleagues for his dedication to work. Joining the Force at the age of 17 in 1993, he had served in the Airport Security Unit and Sau Mau Ping District, before being transferred to the Kowloon West Traffic Enforcement and Control Division.
