New Territories North (NTN) Region is running an "Outstanding Car Park Attendant Award Scheme" as another measure to enlist public support for enhancing car park security.

With about 500 public and private car parks all over the Region from Tuen Mun to Tai Po, the objective of the year-long award scheme is to motivate and encourage car park attendants to report crimes committed in car parks and come forward with related information.

The award scheme was launched at a recent seminar organised by the Regional Crime Prevention Office and the Regional Anti-vehicle Crime Unit for 150 car park operators. It will run until February next year, to be followed by a presentation ceremony of the Award in the following month.

Concerned about the problems of vehicles missing from car parks and theft from vehicles, NTN Region has been working closely with car park operators, management companies and security agencies to study appropriate measures to beef up security and management of car parks, such as setting up an in/out control system, putting up wire mesh, and improving lighting, etc. Since the setting up of the Regional Anti-vehicle Crime Unit in 2002, there has been a significant drop in the number of missing vehicle reports, particularly those concerning trailers.

NTN will continue carrying out stop-and-search operations in all car parks, and distributing posters and leaflets to disseminate information on precautionary measures to motorists.
