"I want to be a Hong Kong champion. I hope to represent Hong Kong in international bowling competitions!" The grand final champion of the 5th Hong Kong Bowling Tour (Graded B), Police Constable Dobee Tsang, disclosed his ambition with a big smile during an interview with OffBeat.

Organised by the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress Ltd, the Bowling Tour comprised four legs and a grand final, which were run on a knockout system. Dobee, winner in two legs' competitions, easily reached the final after defeating 80 challengers. With excellent performance, he finally won the grand final championship.

Although Dobee has been playing bowling for just about three years, he has gained awards in various competitions, such as the Police Inter-District Tenpin Bowling Championship. In July this year, he also won six medals in a bowling competition held in Shenzhen.

Bowling to promote healthy lifestyle

Dobee's participation in bowling was rather accidental. He recalled, "About three years ago, a Police Bowling Club member was given the job of organising Healthy Lifestyle Tenpin Bowling League. He asked me to join the league, and that was how my association with bowling started. Even though I didn't get any awards in that competition, I love bowling ever since."

Dobee is now working in Airport Security Unit (ASU). He said every ASU member has to train hard so as to keep fit, and fitness does help in playing bowling to a certain extent. "Don't think that playing bowling requires less energy. Sometimes bowlers have to play for a whole day, so if you are not physically fit, you can't give the best of your skills." he noted.

Talent plus hard work

Having no formal training in bowling, Dobee picked up his skills from bowlers in various competitions. And he has improved his skills and techniques a lot with intensive practices.

Dobee practises three to four times a week. "I strongly believe that if people want to do well in a sport, they have to practise hard. Besides, with endless practice, I can maintain my physique which in turn helps my ASU work," said Dobee.

Next target

Dobee's next target is to take part in the 30th Hong Kong International Open Bowling Championships to be held this month. For him, victory does not matter too much. He just hopes that by then he would relax and do his best.
