The Hong Kong Police Sailing Club carried off the second place in the 8th Police World Sailing Championships held on the island of Phuket, Thailand, from October 23 to 31. The Force hosted this bi-annual event through the club, which is chaired by David Madoc-Jones. The club fielded two teams for the seven races, which were keenly contested in most ideal conditions. At the end, Switzerland won the championships, repeating their feats in four previous events. The club's "A" team tied with Germany in second place, but it had gained their points with consistently higher placings, and was therefore awarded second overall, with Germany 3rd, Croatia 4th, UK 5th and Hong Kong "B" team 6th. The "A" team members were Steve Tait (skipper), John Breen, Francis Cheung Yiu-keung, Lau Kai-leung (Haak Jai), Paul Stripp, Kwok Chi-wai (Foh Sing) and Gary Leung Kwok-wai. The "B" team comprised Patrick Chan (skipper), Mike Armstrong, Chau Kim-fai, Paul Mounsey, Lee Wai-kuen (navigator), Steve Chandler and Shum Siu-yuen. On one race, the club came both 1st and 2nd. Given that its rivals had practised for some time before the event, whereas the Hong Kong teams were sailing together for the first time, the outcome is outstanding. Altogether 71 sailing enthusiasts and guests attended the event, and such was the overall success, the Force has been chosen again to host the 9th Police World Sailing Championships in Thailand in 2006.
