One hundred and five members of the Emergency Unit New Territories North (EU NTN) Voluntary Service Team have been presented with awards for providing services to severe mentally handicapped inmates of Wai Ji Christian Service's Bradbury Hostel at Tin King. Among the award recipients, Sergeants Lam Hok-chim and To Kwok-fai have received the Outstanding Volunteer Award for their contributions. The award presentation ceremony was held at NT North Regional Headquarters last month, with the Professional Supervisor of Wai Ji Christian Service Chung Wai-ming, and Senior Superintendent (OPS NTN) Leung King-hang officiating. Some of the inmates and their family members also attended the ceremony to show appreciation to the Force volunteers. The occasion was pervaded with a touching atmosphere as footage of volunteer services was shown. Led by Woman Chief Inspector Mimi Chan Wing-mee, the EU NTN Voluntary Service Team has teamed up with the Bradbury Hostel to run the "Voluntary Task Force Scheme" to improve and reinforce inmates' physical and cardio capabilities, social communications and rehabilitation skills through strenuous activities and interaction with the able-bodied. In a period of 15 months, over 170 members of the voluntary service team have spent 3,468 hours in organising 36 different outdoor activities for 400 inmates, including sailing, camping, hiking, swimming, kite-flying, fun day camping, etc. Through helping the inmates in accomplishing various tasks in the activities, the volunteers have fully demonstrated their love, care, perseverance and patience, and are pleased to see the inmates' gradual improvements. The volunteers have also brought their family members and friends along to lend a hand at the activities to promote the healthy lifestyle advocated by the Force. "We can hardly describe the satisfaction and the sense of achievement we have obtained; one has to come along to the functions to get the feel. We're delighted to have such rewarding experiences and we would definitely continue doing more volunteer work," said some of the volunteers.
