Judges have selected winners from many entries to the essay competition on "My Vital Engagement", which was launched by the Psychological Services Group (PSG) as part of its three-year Mental Health Promotion Campaign - "Balances and Wisdom 2004-2007".

The judges, Dr Samuel Ho, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychology, the University of Hong Kong, and Mr Eddie Li, Senior Police Clinical Psychologist, have chosen the best five essays according to criteria relating to content, writing skills and number of words.

The five winners are Station Sergeant Li Man-tung, Chief Inspector Tsui Wai-hung, Executive Officer II Li Yee-hung, Senior Inspector Cheung Hoi-yan and Police Constable Kam Suen. Each of them will be awarded a book coupon of $300 and a certificate. Their essays will be published in the "PsyNet" column in the coming two issues of OffBeat.

Besides the winners, the judges also awarded four officers with a Honourable Mention because of the high quality of their entries. They are Detective Police Constable Chan Ping-kong, Chief Inspector Au Yeung Kwok-kee, Police Constable Wong Hok-king and Senior Inspector Tso Kai-chi, each to receive a book coupon of $50 and a certificate.

PSG thanked all the participants of the essay competition for their support, and wish that they would continue enjoying the fun and meaning brought to them by their vital engagement.

Balances and Wisdom Seminar

The third "Balances and Wisdom" seminar of 2005 organised by the PSG will be held on July 9 at the PHQ Auditorium. Details are as follows:

Topic: How Police Culture affects our Families - Interactive Dramas (3/2005)

Speakers: Mr Patrick Kung, Force Training Officer, Ms Alison Mak, Police Clinical Psychologist, Ms Paulina Kwok, Centre Supervisor of Caritas Family Crisis Support Centre

Content: Police have unique cultures such as emphasising order and discipline, scepticism of others' intention, and having difficulties revealing self-vulnerabilities, etc. Perhaps without total awareness, police officers may bring home these cultures, which would subtly affect family relationship. At this seminar, some typical police family stories will be put on stage in the form of dramas. Force members are welcome to participate in the dramas to recount their own family stories. Spouses are also welcome.

Mr Kung and Ms Mak ran a workshop on "How Police Culture Affects Family Relationship" in "Learning and Development Exhibition" in March and received very positive responses. Ms Kwok, who has rich experiences in handling family cases, will share with participants her expertise of marital enrichment.

For enrolment, call Mrs Sit at 2866-1992 during office hours or contact PSG by PEN at psg-gr@police.gov.hk Spouses are also welcome.

Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chan Wai-ki will officiate at the Inauguration Ceremony of the newly established "Carelinks Cadre" in this activity.
