The latest technology used on board new police launches demonstrated the Force's commitment to improving policing services, said Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai at the commissioning ceremony for two Keka class launches at Joss House Bay, Sai Kung on June 13.

Each of the Keka launches, PL 64 and PL 65, measures 30 metres in length and 6.3 metres in width. Made of aluminium alloy, it has a displacement of 110 tonnes and can reach a maximum speed of 27 knots. The sophisticated facilities installed on board include radar, global positioning system, electronic chart and navigation equipment.

In addition, the wheelhouse's 360-degree panoramic field of vision puts officers in good command of what is going on in surrounding waters.

To better cope with operational needs, the new launches are equipped with cranes to facilitate the launching and retrieving of speedboats.

The Keka class launches replace the Damen class patrol launches, which had been in service for the past 20 years. At present, a total of six Keka class launches are serving in Hong Kong waters.

Mr Lee pointed out that in the coming years, the Marine Region would implement the "Versatile Maritime Policing Response" strategy, which will make use of a smaller and more versatile fleet installed with advanced visual facilities and technological equipment, like radar and the global positioning system, to enhance law enforcement at sea and provide quality services in a more economical manner.
