Following the contract-signing in April with the Azeus Systems Ltd for the introduction of a new system to replace the Enhanced Police Operational Nominal Index Computer System (EPONICS), a project launching ceremony was held on June 3 with Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Lo Yik-kee and Azeus Systems Ltd Managing Director Lee Wan-lik officiating. The EPONICS has been used in the Force since 1991 to maintain the criminal records for various operations. It will be replaced by a new system known as PONICS III, which will support bilingual processing, multi-media, user-friendly graphical user interface and other latest IT technologies. With the new system in place, many workflows will be streamlined to improve efficiency. For example, arrest documents and photos will be processed electronically. The whole replacement project will last for two years and the new system will be launched in 2007. It is expected that with deployment of the system, the Operational Nominal Index Computer System would be greatly enhanced and the Force Criminal Intelligence System would be greatly strengthened. |
