Officers walk for under-privileged children | |||
The Force has raised $200,000 in a walkathon for education by the police forces in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao for building a school for under-privileged children in Guangdong. This meaningful event has received the blessings of top brass from the forces and Beijing, and will likely become an annual fund-raiser in the future. Speaking at a ceremony of the walkathon, the Vice-Chairman of the Police Science Society of China, Mr Zhu Entao, said: "We should continue to organise such a meaningful event each year for the benefit of more children denied the opportunity of receiving education!" Taking part in the three-day walkathon from Hong Kong to Guangdong was a 116-member contingent comprising officers from police constables to assistant commissioners, retired officers and their families. The participation, apart from strengthening liaison among the three places, enabled officers to put into practice the concepts of healthy lifestyle and caring for the young advocated by the Force. The event also enabled young officers to brush up their skills of planning, organisation and leadership, and to repay society by helping the under-privileged. The walkathon started under brilliant sunshine at the Golden Bauhinia Square on June 3, led by Legislative Council President, Mrs Rita Fan; the Founding President of the Junior Police Officers' Association, Ms Maria Tam Wai-chu; the Deputy Director General of Police Liaison Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Govenment in the HKSAR, Mr Zhang Rongsheng; Director of Personnel and Training, Mr Tsang Wai-hung; Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Mr Chan Wai-ki, and New Territories North Regional Commander, Mr Cheung Siu-wah. The contingent then walked along the waterfront to the Hong Kong-Macao Terminal to board a hydrofoil for Macao. On arrival in Macao, the contingent was joined by senior Macao police officers on the trip to Zhuhai. It is expected that the second walkathon will be held after completion of the school next year. By then Force members will be asked to donate generously and to visit the under-privileged students.
