Retired Deputy Commissioner, Mr James Morrin, died in March in hospital in his native Ireland after a short illness at the age of 72. He had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Hong Kong Police Fore, retiring in 1989 from the post of Director of Special Branch, and in the rank of Deputy Commissioner. Throughout his service, Mr Morrin was an efficient and highly respected officer. He was one of the few European Officers who in addition to learning to speak Cantonese, also studied Putonghua and was able to read and write Chinese characters. He attended the UK National Defence College in 1971. He was a life long bachelor, and was teetotal, although he did enjoy a cigar. He was an avid reader, and a very sociable man with a wide range of friends.
