Question: "I am an officer appointed on local terms and have been working on an alternate Saturday off pattern. I have been nominated to undertake overseas training in the US on full-pay study leave. If after taking 19 days overseas full-pay study leave ending on a Friday (prior to an on-Saturday), I plan to stay behind in the US for sightseeing for two weeks and resume duty on a Monday. How many days of vacation leave do I need to take?"

Answer: As, in your case, you are not returning to Hong Kong immediately after your study leave, you would not be granted return journey time for the on-Saturday after the study leave. Therefore, you should start taking vacation leave on Saturday. Since you are taking more than 12 days vacation leave, your leave will be counted on a calendar day basis, and vacation leave will be required to cover intervening Saturdays, Sundays and the Saturday at the end of the period of leave. As a result, the total amount of vacation leave you will need to take is 15 days.

The above example is for illustration only. If necessary, consult your GR for assessment of your leave plan.
