Question: "I am Sergeant Cheung. I have arranged for my daughter to study in a university in the United States after the summer holiday. By that time, I will apply for leave for about two months and accompany her to the U.S. to make the necessary arrangements for her.

"Accompanying my daughter to the U.S. will require some extra money. Originally, I planned to get a loan from the bank to meet expenses, but the interest rate is very high. What can I do?"

Answer: Sergeant Cheung has the option to apply for an advance of salary from the Government to meet his needs. According to CSR 622, an officer on pensionable, agreement or month-to-month terms proceeding on approved leave or study leave outside Hong Kong may receive an advance of up to three months' salary prior to departure. The amount of the advance will depend on the actual period of his leave to be spent outside Hong Kong.

An application for an advance of salary has to be made, via the officer's Formation Commander well in advance, in a prescribed application form (application forms available at divisional registries) so that the approved application could reach the Treasury via the Finance Wing of Police Headquarters at least one month before the expected date of departure.
