More records set in Dowman Road Race | |||
Three new records were set in the latest Dowman Road Race held on February 4, the seventh day of the Chinese New Year. Following exchanges of "Kung Hei Fat Choi" amongst runners and invited guests, the race started off with a bang at 10 am, with the guest of honour, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Lee Ka-chiu officiating. This annual race drew around 1,600 runners, both serving and retired officers and civilian staff, to the starting point in Pak Tam Chung Country Park. Nearly all of them completed the 12-km course within the demanding time limit of 90 minutes. The first runner to cross the finish line was Senior Inspector Andy Naylor who broke his own record with a time of 39 minutes 7 seconds in the Men's Open, which is the seventh consecutive win and a record total of nine wins overall. Station Sergeant Lo Wai-keung set a record of 45 minutes 43 seconds in Men's Master III category, and Woman Police Constable Wong Siu-ping clocked 50 minutes 55 seconds for the Women's Open. Police Tactical Unit won the Overall Team Championship for "Specialist Units", while New Territories North Regional Headquarters clinched the "Other Formations" title. Many top brass were on hand to lend support to the race and present prizes to winners. They included Deputy Commissioner (Management) Fung Siu-yuen, Director (Operations) Yam Tat-wing, Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Tang Kam-moon, Kowloon East Regional Commander Kevan Cooper, New Territories North Regional Commander Cheung Siu-wah, and Wong Tai Sin District Commander Ian Seabourne. Police Civil Secretary Stephen Pang was also among the invited guests. A special guest was Professor Sheilah Hamilton who had worked as a Government Forensic Chemist before leaving Hong Kong in the late 1980s. She specially came to support the race and present the Hamilton Trophy she donated for the Dowman's Women Senior category in 1988. A number of prizes for different categories were awarded to winners. In addition, souvenir certificates will be awarded to runners who have completed the race within the time limit. Full race results are available on the Police Athletics Club (PAC) website, www.hkpac.com. The success of this year's Dowman Road Race was made possible by the assistance given to PAC by volunteers in the Force and other police sport clubs in organising the Force-wide athletic event. PAC is also grateful to the Police Cycling Club, Police Football Referees Club, and Hong Kong Adventure Corps.
