Officers fight tooth and nail in KE Sports Day |

Despite the initially unpromising weather, some 600 officers and civilian staff participated in Kowloon East Region's Annual Sports Day held in the Police Sports and Recreation Club last month. As usual, the events of the day ranged from the highly competitive seven-a-side football, squash, tennis and tug-of-war, to the slightly more cerebral ten-pin bowling and the simply light hearted promotion relay and cheering competition. In a thoroughly light hearted atmosphere, cheered by the pallid rays of a spring sun and the proximity of the PSRC bar - vital to avoid dehydration - officers competed tooth and nail for the Region's Minor and Major Unit trophies. Reputations disappeared by the minute. Long-time tug-of-war champions T KE, fell to a highly disciplined KTDIST team, despite their ADVC Crime's disintegrating football boots. SMPDIST demolished the former ten-pin bowling stars WTSDIST to take the laurels in this event for the first time. Crime KE retained their reputation for guile and skill by winning the lawn bowls for the second year in a row. RAILDIST emerged in the light of day to win the fun sports event. SMPDIST, with its supporters in Red Indian attire - surely it can't still be a Hung Faan Kui - almost, but not quite, knocked T KE off its four-year pedestal of Champion Cheering Group. The day climaxed with a hard fought battle in the seven-a-side football between RAILDIST and SMPDIST, with the latter eventually winning 2-1. RAILDIST, however, were the proud winners of the Minor Unit trophy, claiming it back after a two-year stint in the T KE canteen. Surprise winners of the Major Unit trophy were SMPDIST, who were able to claim the cup after it had become an almost permanent fixture in WTSDIST.
