Hang Seng Bank announced on July 10 a donation of $1 million in pledged reward money to the Force for the welfare of police officers and their children. Of this sum, $500,000 will be donated to the Police Welfare Fund, and another $500,000 to the Police Children's Education Trust and the Police Education and Welfare Trust. The bank pledged to pay the money in 2001 as a reward for information leading to the arrest and satisfactory prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the murder of a Hang Seng security guard during an armed robbery at the bank's Belvedere Garden branch. At the request of the Force, the reward offer was withdrawn in May 2006. After receiving the donation cheque from the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, Mr Raymond Or, Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai thanked Hang Seng Bank for their generous donation to the Police Welfare Fund and the Police Education Trusts. He also praised the bank for their continuous support to the Force in promoting fight crime messages and organising youth activities. In conclusion, Mr Lee pledged to maintain Hong Kong one of the safest cities in the world. In reply, Mr Or said: "As a good corporate citizen, Hang Seng believes in contributing to the well-being of the communities where we operate. By directing the public reward money we had pledged to these charitable funds, we can help those police officers and their families who need financial assistance." The Police Welfare Fund finances different types of welfare services, including loans and grants to officers for various welfare reasons, financial assistance to officers who are ill or who have been injured on duty and their families, grants for further education of police officers, and healthy lifestyle activities. The Police Children's Education Trust and the Police Education and Welfare Trust both aim at facilitating the higher education of the children of junior police officers and the general education of the children of police officers of all ranks, including auxiliary police officers. Assistance is provided in the forms of scholarships and bursaries. Special grants are also available to disabled or orphaned children of police families.
