About 13 days after it was established upon amalgamation of the Wong Tai Sin Police District, the Rural Area Patrol Team in the district conducted its first major operation on July 15 to locate a 71-year-old man reported missing from home.

The man, who had been sick for several years, was reported missing by his family living in Tsz Ching Estate in Tsz Wan Shan. Following initial enquiries and search of the vicinity of his home for several days, the Rural Area Patrol Team was called out to conduct a more thorough search along the hillside of Temple Hill. Subsequently, the team found the man in a wooded area off a hiking trail leading to the Kwun Yam Temple. He was later certified dead in hospital.

Though members of the patrol team were sorry for the outcome of their search operation, their discovery has dispelled the anxiety the man's family had endured.

The patrol team was formed to provide more comprehensive coverage for preventing and detecting crime in the rural areas of the Wong Tai Sin District. The areas it covers include popular hiking trails such as the Maclehose Trail, Lion Rock Country Park, Reunification Pavilion and Hung Mui Kuk Barbecue Site. In addition to search operations, the team actively liaises with nearby villagers, patrols popular hiking areas and provides quick response to emergencies.
