'Zebra' loses battle against cancer

Police Constable Tsui Pak-wai, affectionately known to his colleagues as "Zebra", passed away on August 3 after struggling with cancer for several months. He was only 34 years old.

The Welfare Services Unit is now providing "Zebra's" family with all the assistance they need.

Married with two children, now aged six and seven, and being the sole breadwinner, "Zebra" lived with his family in police quarters. As a family man, he found relief from the stress of his heavy workload upon seeing his cute and lovely kids, as well as the home he established with utmost care. Showing exemplary conduct to his children, "Zebra", as a caring and loving father, did everything he could to groom them. Being a model father in the eyes of his children, he knew very well that children would be the pillars of society one day. So he set a good example to his children, apart from just focusing his attention on their school performances.

Having served in the Force for 13 years, "Zebra" had been attached to TWDIV, PTU, EU NTS and finally MESU KWCDIV. He was very popular among his colleagues and friends for his kindness, perseverance, and diligence. He was always serious and enthusiastic about his work. A man with vigour and leadership, "Zebra" had been appointed as Acting Sergeant on many occasions, leading his colleagues in various operations to prevent crime and arrest law-breakers. He regarded these as the prime duties of a police officer.

"Zebra" loved sports and treasured his life, always staying away from cigarettes and alcohol. He frequently went jogging and exercised in gymnasiums, not only enhancing his physique, but also inspiring his colleagues to follow suit. By organising activities for his team, he encouraged officers to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

In April this year, "Zebra" was sent to a hospital with severe abdominal pain. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that he was suffering from liver cancer and that the cancer cells had spread in his lungs. During his illness, he was not only physically and mentally exhausted, but also had to face heavy medical expenses, as well as the worries and anxiety of his family. Nevertheless, he never gave up and was determined to combat his chronic disease. "Zebra's" colleagues and friends gave him unlimited spiritual support and encouragement, helping him to carry on with the battle against his disease. At that time, the medical treatment in Hong Kong could hardly cure him, so he turned to the renowned physicians in Zhuhai, Guangzhou and Zhongshan hospitals for synthetic treatments of combined Western and Chinese medicine.

On August 3, his condition became critical due to a liver haemorrhage whilst he was in the Zhongshan Renmin Hospital. Despite this, he maintained his spirit by looking at photos of his work and daily life and watching Force videos, in the presence of his family. And he felt very proud of being a member of the Force. Though his life was short, he had no regrets because he had met a lot of good mentors and friends, and worked with devoted colleagues. He also felt honoured to have had such experience in his life. Though he was most worried about his family, he was convinced that his colleagues and friends would help his family through such a difficult time. Subsequently "Zebra" went into a coma and left us in peace.

"Zebra" has gone, leaving us in sorrow and grief. Seeing a young, ambitious, energetic and considerate person, we did not realize that we should give him actual and spiritual support until he was ill. Nevertheless, we are most impressed by his vitality and unswerving fighting spirit. Zebra's family has to live on in a very difficult situation, but we are convinced that our big Police Force will rally behind his family with care, love and compassion.

PC Tsui's fighting spirit lives on
