CP delivers a keynote speech at the Interpol General Assembly

Over 600 delegates from 154 member countries attended the conference from September 19 to 22, making it the largest in the history of Interpol. The conference's central theme was the importance of using the latest technology to ensure that essential crime fighting tools are easily accessible to frontline officers.

Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai was a keynote speaker at the Commissioner's Panel on the use of technology to fight crime when he briefed the delegates on how the Force had been investing heavily in technology since the 1990s to benefit from the opportunities presented by the digital revolution. The presentation was well received with delegates expressing interest in the development of the Force's Communal Information System, and POINT.

The conference also covered a wide range of key policing issues of international concern, including the fight against terrorism, corruption, online child pornography, people smuggling and drug trafficking.

Updates were also provided on the expansion and success of the various databases operated by Interpol. In the past five years these databases have more than doubled in size and currently contain, among other things, information on more than 10,000 suspected terrorists, three million stolen vehicles and 40,000 internationally wanted persons.

A number of resolutions were also passed. These included the establishment of the world's first international anti-corruption academy for tackling corruption within public services worldwide. Scheduled to open in Vienna in 2007, the academy will provide anti-corruption training, education and technical assistance to all the 186 member countries, and assist in implementing the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

The conference also saw San Marino and Montenegro being admitted as new members of Interpol.
