A total of 54 vehicles drove off from the compound of the Police Driving and Traffic Training Division in Fanling early on September 9 for the 12-day Yunnan Drive organised by the Police Motoring Club (PMC).

The convoy covered over 5,000 km, passing through Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. Other than visiting famous tourist destinations such as the Lijiang Ancient City (a World Heritage Site), the convoy also visited the Wanfenglin (a Karst Landscape Natural Wonder in Guizhou), Tiger-leaping Gorge (with a depth of 3,900m) and had a social gathering with the Yunnan Public Security Bureau (PSB) in Kunming.

According to Chief Inspector Alex Chung, Vice-Chairman of PMC, many people were having mixed feelings on the third day of their trip when the convoy arrived at the Yungui Highland, an area with an average height of about 2,000m above sea-level.

"On the one hand, we were amazed by the beautiful scenery of the corn fields and sunflower fields, etc. on both sides of the highway. On the other hand, we noticed that the power output of our cars had dropped because of the decrease in air pressure and some people started worrying about their vehicles and altitude sickness. Other than driving along highways, the convoy also passed through some winding country roads between Dali and Lijiang.

"The countryside looked at its best in September - the roads being hidden in mist, double-rainbow on the skyline, and golden sunlight shining on the rice fields. It was also good to see Force members have a good exchange of work knowledge and policing experiences with the Yunnan PSB at the Kunming gathering in a relaxing atmosphere," said Alex.

The aim of this HK-China Drive is to promote a healthy lifestyle among Force members and, at the same time, enable them to understand better the recent developments on the Mainland and enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way. PMC is planning the China Drive 2007 and those interested may contact Mr Peter Lo on 9870-3013 for PMC membership and further details.
