There was a 10 per cent decrease in traffic accidents in Eastern District during the first eight months of 2006, compared with the same period last year, said Eastern District Commander Peter Morgan while addressing the District's Road Safety Carnival last month.

"Also, there has been no traffic black spots in Eastern District so far in 2006. Despite the decrease in traffic accidents, police will continue their efforts in promoting road safety within the District," he added.

Mr Morgan pointed out that "Enhancement of Road Safety" is one of the Commissioner's Operational Targets this year. To support "Zero accidents on the road, Hong Kong's Goal", Eastern District will launch a series of road safety promotion activities. "Smart Driving with Courtesy" is one of the focus areas that aims at instilling a more positive and considerate attitude among drivers so that all road users can stay alert, be courteous and obey the law.

He thanked all those who have made the carnival possible, including Eastern District Council, Eastern District Council Traffic and Transport Committee, Eastern District Road Safety Campaign Organising Committee, Eastern District JPC Activities Committee and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol.

He also thanked artistes Niki Zhou Liqi and Jade Kwan Sum-yin for helping promote road safety as Eastern District Road Safety Ambassadors for 2006/2007.

"I very much hope that with multi-departmental co-operation, partnership with road safety stakeholders, media and other organisations, road safety messages will be disseminated to people from all walks of life," Mr Morgan concluded.
