The Chairman of the Road Safety Council and Deputy Commissioner (Operations), Mr Tang King-shing, has called on the community to remain cautious to accidents and maintain road safety efforts.

Speaking at this year's Road Safety Campaign Launching Ceremony on November 25, Mr Tang said the fatalities of road traffic accidents in 2005 dropped to a 47-year low of 139 and fatal road traffic accidents in the first ten months of 2006 stood at 108, which is six per cent lower than that of the corresponding period last year.

"But we must not be complacent. We must continue to strive for zero road accidents," he urged.

Mr Tang said this year's road safety campaign would adopt the theme, "Smart Driving with Courtesy", with a series of activities to publicise courtesy to road users in order to promote greater awareness of road safety and reduce traffic accidents. And joint efforts would be made with transport operators and community bodies to drive home road safety messages, including District Councils.

To launch this year's Road Safety Campaign, a television special appealing to pedestrians, motorists and passengers to follow road safety rules and introducing this year's campaign activities, will be broadcast on TVB-Jade at 11:05pm on December 21.

The Road Safety Council is aiming at promoting a safe and efficient road system in Hong Kong, minimising traffic accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users, with the vision of achieving zero accidents.
