A presentation ceremony to mark the successful completion of the Standard Crime Prevention Course was held at Police Headquarters last month.

During the ceremony Chief Superintendent Ng Kam-wing of Crime Wing presented Certificates of Appreciation to guest lecturers who had contributed to the running of three crime prevention courses this year while Superintendent Mark Medwecki of Crime Prevention Bureau presented Course Certificates to trainees.

CSP Ng thanked the guest lecturers for their professional presentations as well as their assistance in arranging visits to various security facilities. He said the assistance provided trainees with first hand knowledge of private security work and better understanding of the roles of police officers and private security personnel. The experience sharing allowed both sides to learn more about each other and would lead to more co-operation in dealing with matters of common concern, resulting in a win-win situation for both the Police and the security industry.

Prior to presenting certificates to the 20 trainees who had successfully completed the course, SP Medwecki said the course had been the subject of extensive revision and was delivered in three weeks as compared with six weeks previously. The reduction of the course duration had been achieved by careful review of course contents, outside visits and practical exercises. All in all, the change of format meant that the course could be run more frequently with more officers attending, and officers would not be absent from work for long.

As a result of the three courses conducted this year, there is a healthy reserve of trained officers who would be able to fill a number of vacancies that would arise in the coming two years. Crime Prevention Bureau would not run any basic crime prevention courses next year but instead would run a series of short courses for Police Community Relations Office staff who are often involved in organising and running crime prevention campaigns.
