New detective training courses for UB officers

The Detective Training Division of the Police College has revamped the District Special Duties Squad Course (DSDS Course), which was introduced in December 1997 to train Uniform Branch officers to take up DSDS duties. Since then, about 300 UB officers have benefited from this course every year.

As a result of a recent review, the DSDS Course will be split into two one-week courses, namely Basic Investigation Course (BIC) and District Special Duties Squad Course (DSDS Course), according to Chief Inspector Lee Loy of the Detective Training Division.

The BIC consists of three modules on (a) processing scene and technical support to basic investigation, (b) witness and suspect handling (interview skills) and (c) preparing for court trial.

The four modules of the new DSDS Course cover (a) technical support, (b) investigation of cases related to dangerous drugs, vice or gambling, (c) handling of District/High Court cases, and (d) integrity & professionalism of DSDS duties.

CIP Lee said the BIC is open to officers other than those going to take up DSDS duties, who require investigation skill training, such as officers of AI, MESU and CAPO, etc. In the long run, the BIC could enhance the overall investigative capability of the Force and help reduce the pressure on the Standard Criminal Investigation Course, he added.

CIP Lee pointed out that as the BIC had been divided into three modules, officers could be nominated for one or more of the modules. Officers selected for DSDS duties, however, still have to attend both the BIC and the new DSDS Course, except those who have attended the BIC.

The new BIC and DSDS Course will be introduced on March 5 and 12 respectively. Calling memo will be sent to Major Formation Commanders in January. For enquiries, call CIP Lee at 2353-5043 (PEN cip-scic-3-dt) or Woman Senior Inspector Leung Siu-yin at 2353-5049 (PEN ip-sip-scic-3-dt).
