Staying away from drugs and joining hands to fight crime were the messages Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) sought to drive home to the Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) communities in Yau Tsim with a series of roadshows late last year.

A major feature of this publicity drive was distribution of leaflets and Crime Information Form in Urdu and Nepali at the Chung King Mansions, Kowloon Mosque and Nanking Street. The NEC communities and local community leaders showed up at the venues to lend a helping hand in the distribution as a gesture of their support for the crime prevention efforts by Yau Tsim District Commander Kevin Woods.

Among the supporters were Mr Yip Wah, Chairman of Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Muhammad Arshad; Chief Imam of Kowloon Mosque, Mr Saeed Uddin; Ex-Honorary Secretary of Kowloon Mosque Management, Mr Nanu Lachman; Chairman of India Club, Mr Larry Parmanand; former chairman of India Association HK, Mr Hum B Gurung of Tamu Association HK, and NEC members of Yau Tsim Junior Police Call.

Several local weekly Urdu newspapers (JANG Hong Kong Weekly and Pak Times) and Nepali newspapers (Everest, Sunrise Weekly Hong Kong and Nepal Post) reported on the roadshows to help promote fight crime messages among NEC communities.

The anti-crime roadshow was a showcase of positive engagement with NEC communities in the fight against crime as a result of the continuing dialogue and cooperation Yau Tsim District fostered with NEC communities over the years. Besides anti-crime publicity, Yau Tsim District meets NEC leaders regularly to promote communication and enlist their support in local policing. As a result, the Pakistani, Nepalese and Indian community leaders all greatly appreciate the initiatives Yau Tsim District has taken.
