Since last November Kowloon City District (KCDIST) has been helping officers to brush up their proficiency in English by running a weekly English Workshop. This highly interactive workshop forms part of the Good Practices and Initiatives adopted by KCDIST to contribute to its continuing improvement programmes. The workshop focuses on English speaking and listening skills, which are by far the most widespread form of communication. Commenting on this, Kowloon City Deputy District Commander Mike McCully said: "Speaking and discussing is an important medium for getting things done, but equally important is the ability to listen carefully and both act and reflect on what is heard. The workshop introduces how it all works, using that awareness to enhance officers' confidence and effectiveness in communicating in English." The workshop adopts a fun and subtly structured five-step approach to improving skills and optimising learning, beginning with an activity centred on learning English skills as a warm up, which is followed by a step-by-step explanation of the learning process, a demonstration at a pace the learner can follow, practices, and finally discussions. After attending the workshop, officers under the "Development Programme for Junior Police Officers with Potential" pointed out that with the coaching and the teacher-student ratio, they had considerably improved their English skills and performance, underscoring not only the value but also the success of the training programme. The success of the programme owes a lot to the services provided by volunteers who are highly experienced in coaching and developing English-speaking skills, namely, Mr McCully, Assistant District Commander Administration Kim Adams, as well as two qualified English teachers, Hung Hom Divisional Commander Daniel Lawley and Senior Inspector Paul Haley. On seeing officers' learning needs being met, the volunteers consider the time and effort they have devoted to the workshop worthwhile.
