The final of the "Bank of China (Hong Kong) - Hong Kong Police Youth Road Safety Quiz" concluded successfully at Police Headquarters on March 10.

The Force ran the quiz in two phases with the sponsorship of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK) to promote road safety awareness among students and youngsters.

In the first phase, an on-line quiz was held for primary and secondary students as well as young people aged between 18 and 30. Response was encouraging with about 100,000 entries received.

Taking part in the final were four secondary schools whose students had scored the highest marks. Eventually, CNEC Christian College clinched the championship, followed by Bishop Hall Jubilee School, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Kwok Yat Wai College and Tuen Mun Government Secondary School.

Speaking at the final, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing said: "The Force spares no efforts in promoting road safety messages. We frequently organise and participate in different road safety publicity activities in a bid to minimise traffic accidents."

He praised the participants for their enthusiasm and urged them to spread road safety messages among their schoolmates, friends and families.

"I hope that with the active participation of the community in disseminating road safety messages, Hong Kong will remain one of the safest cities in the world," Mr Yam added.

There were 135 fatal traffic accidents in 2006, a drop of 2.9 per cent compared with 2005, which saw the lowest fatal traffic accident figure in 49 years.

Mr David Lam Yim-nam, Deputy Chief Executive of BOCHK, said: "Younger generations are important road users and future drivers. Our intention of sponsoring the Road Safety Quiz is to help foster road safety awareness amongst the youth and encourage them to adhere to road safety through interactive education and influence over the behaviour of their peers and families.

"With the large-scale and in-depth education and publicity campaigns conducted by the Police, together with the concerted efforts of citizens and youngsters, we believe that a metropolis like Hong Kong would remain one of the world's safest cities for road users," Mr Lam added.

Meanwhile, the Border District Junior Police Call (JPC) District Council has won the "JPC Road Safety Project Competition" by edging out 20 other JPC teams.
